
Situated on 200 acres the university was originally the National Institute for Higher Education established in 1972. In 1989 it was granted university status. It has six colleges comprising both departments and research centres. It is Ireland’s leading university in industry led research.

The Graduate School supports the development and delivery of research and taught postgraduate programmes across the University of Limerick and provides a range of support services for postgraduate students.
Research Support Services provides assistance and intelligence to researchers on a range of funded research programmes supported by national and international agencies. The unit liases with these agencies and also interacts with industry in relation to sponsored research programmes.
The Industry and Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is the specialist entity established to support and develop innovative activity emanating from the University. The primary mission of the Office is to ensure that opportunities for the commercial development of the University's intellectual property are pursued and implemented.
